volunteers-needed.jpg

As President of Reston Runners, I am taking the opportunity in today’s newsletter to ask for your help in support of club operations. Membership in a club like Reston Runners provides so many opportunities – scheduled runs on well-planned and marked courses, hydration support, various social events, diverse developmental programs, and a few races. It takes a lot of work to make all this happen. Hence my note to all of you. While it is a privilege to serve our running community, I need to ask that you also give back to the club that has and continues to provide so much to each of you. We need you to step up and volunteer to help. As a result of the pandemic, we scaled back operations and programs quite a lot, but over the 18 months, we have been bringing back all our programs, social events, and other activities. Many of these activities have been managed by the Board and some dedicated program leaders/coordinators. It is time to share these volunteer opportunities (and responsibilities). Please consider volunteering for various activities or saying “yes” when a Board member or Program coordinator asks for your help. You can also ask me or any Board member how to get engaged.

Thank you,

Catherine

Welcome New Board Members

Welcome Amy Byerly & Cylde Rollins who have joined the Board of Directors as interim Members at Large to fill Board vacancies.

10 Weeks to 10K Program

 1010K_small.jpg

The Reston Runner's 10 Weeks to 10K Program returns this year starting Saturday September 24 - November 26, 2022  at 8 am. The program culminates with a 10k in early December. The 10k will be the Ringing in Hope 10k on December 3, 2022 in Ashburn.  The race fees are additional to the program fees.

The program is open to walkers, runners, run/walkers, who want to train and do a 10K race.  Both new and experienced people are welcomed.  Participants should be able to walk, run, run/walk, at least 3 miles prior to the beginning of the program.  The goal is to complete or improve upon a 10K race.

Each Saturday morning at 8:00 am, the participants meet with the coaches for a brief talk (5 minutes or less) and a walk, run or run/walk.  We’ll meet at  Reston Runners weekly Saturday location.  The location typically is at a local school, pool or park in Reston.

After registration, but before the program starts, participants are given a workout schedule which includes where the Saturday meetings are going to be held.  The schedule also includes the workout that each participant is expected to do for each day of the program.  Participants are also encouraged to join in the Reston Runner runs on Sunday mornings too for additional opportunities to run with a group.

The program fee is $45 and includes the weekly runs, the workout schedule, a t-shirt, ad hoc coaching. No refunds will be given.

W&OD Trail Safety

IMG_0398.JPG

As W&OD Trail users, many of us have experienced unsafe or overly aggressive cyclist behavior. Recently, the Club recieved email from an individual who was run over and seriously hurt. As an organization that promotes safe running, walking, and cycling behavor, Club President, Catherine Nelson, has communicated  with responsible organizations including the Northern Virginia Park Authority, The Friends of the W&OD, and the Reston Bike Club on the matter. These groups are doing all they can with volunteer trail patrol, signage, and education. That said, it behooves each of us to be alert and safety conscious when using the trail.

RIP  Cliff DeWitt

Message from our Club President – On June 1, I returned to full-time government service as an Under Secretary at the Defense Department.  As required by the administration, I am resigning all other paid and unpaid positions, including the role of President of Reston Runners.

As it happened, my time as President exactly coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and was a difficult time for the club and for many other groups and all aspects of normal life, as you all know.  I am grateful to those who stuck with us during these tough times and am happy to know the club made it through. Today, we are back in business with our weekly run/walks and water support and, as reported in this eNews, our programs and social events are coming back as well. I will see you all out on the paths, and I wish the Reston Runners all the best.

Mike McCord

Safety Protocols for Group Runs/Walks Issued – The Club has issued its Covid-19 Safety Protocols, governing how we will conduct our group runs and walks. The overarching principles are that as long as the Coronavirus remains a dangerous threat, it is essential for individuals to follow the current government guidance, as well commonsense safety protocols for group activity. These protocols are mandatory for participants in Reston Runners runs and walks. Please review them before you resume running with the club. I hope you will find them easy to remember and consistent with your own current practices.

Among other things, these protocols call for:
• not participating if you are feeling sick or ill, or have a fever, or if you have been in contact with someone that has had Covid-19;
• making a careful decision about participating if you are in a high-risk category (age or underlying medical condition);
• maintaining 10-foot distancing while exercising and 6-foot distancing at all other times;
• running and walking in line or in the zig-zag pattern in the RRCA Group Running guide (available through the safety protocols link) unless there is ample room to do so abreast or to pass; and
• being a good neighbor when encountering others.

See the link for more details. Compliance with these protocols should reduce risks to you and other Club members, demonstrate to others that we are being responsible, and hopefully reduce the likelihood that others will contact the authorities about alleged noncompliance with safety guidelines.

Bring your own water and sports drinks; communal water support will not be provided until further notice. There will be no organized post-run/walk breakfasts until further notice.

WELCOME BACK!!

Return to Group Runs and Walks –  Governor Northam increased the limit on outdoor group gatherings to 100 persons as of April 1st.  This allows our Club to resume group runs and walks, with some restrictions for everyone’s safety:

  • Beginning in April, we are expanding our menu of weekend course offerings.
  • You are not required to wear a mask outdoors when exercising.
  • You are still required to wear a mask outdoors otherwise, unless you are at least 6 feet away from others. So please bring a mask with you for before and after the run/walk and so that you can quickly cover your face when you are passing another person on the path.
  • Be mindful of others as we get back out on the paths – distancing is still a best practice.
  • If we have a big turnout, split up the group and stagger your starts!
  • We are not resuming club water support or post-run breakfasts at this time.
  • We would like to resume course marking, but we need volunteers to help. If you are able to do so, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • You all did a great job of staying safe in 2020 – keep it up! We look forward to taking this first step toward getting back to normal.

Mike McCord

President, Reston Runners

Looking to a better year ahead, the Club held a virtual General Meeting on February 21, 2021 at which election results for the 2021 Board of Directors were announced. Members approved proposed updates to the Club Bylaws.  Joan and John Koss were the winners of this year's "Joe Fleig Green Jacket Award" for outstanding service to the Club.

Now is the time for those with Memberships expiring in 2020, and past members to RENEW your Reston Runners Membership.

In order to keep the Club financially viable, and to return to more rewarding training programs and social activities as the Pandemic permits, a change was made to the dues and membership structure (see below). To maintain and revitalize your Club, and its support for friendships and fitness, please consider renewing NOW.

Virtual General Meeting was held Sunday September 20 at 7 PM–  The motion appoved by a Quorum of members was as follows:

  • Effective on approval by vote of the members, Reston Runners new and renewal memberships shall be single-person annual memberships with annual dues of $35.
  • Reston Runners will discontinue family memberships.
  • These changes will take effect when members renew.

Why did we make this change? See these LINKS for supporting FAQrationale and overview financial statement, and detailed financials.

Mike meant a lot to many people and did many charitable works in his too short life.  More than 200 people have contributed about $31,000 to scholarshipestablished in his name.  His employer, Ted Leonsis, owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, will match the total contributions.  For those who did not see it earlier, MS&E  paid a halftime tribute to Mike at a Washington Wizards basketball game.

Sad News for the Reston Runners Family

Our e-news editor and long-time member of the Reston Runners, Jim Ratzenberger and his wife Sheila lost their son Michael in a traffic accident this week.  Please keep the Ratzenberger family in your thoughts and prayers.  The family has provided us the following information:

Mike Ratzenberger, son of Jim and Sheila Ratzenberger and brother to Emily, passed away on April 18, 2021 at the age of 32.  His main passion was sports, and he pursued educational opportunities to secure a behind the scenes position with his favorite teams.  His happiest day was when he landed his dream job at Monumental Sports & Entertainment in Washington. D.C., where his position enabled him to explore his interests in both sports law and business.

Mike was involved in a number of charities, most recently Sports Biz Cares, which seeks to create career opportunities for individuals that are passionate about sports and currently underrepresented in the sports business.  The legacy he left after only 32 years is amazing.  He believed strongly in giving back and would have been happy to know the scholarship created in his name will create opportunities for those who could benefit from the help.

His family, friends, and others in his life will miss him dearly.  A visitation/commemoration is being planned.  In lieu of flowers or meal deliveries, memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship set up in his name through Sports Biz Camps.

Member Survey ResultsThank you to everyone who participated in the member survey. Your feedback is essential to providing the best membership experience. Please VIEW the detailed results and contact any board member with comments or questions. Actions taken already include a new system for the weekly eNews letter, and redoing the website to make it more readable on mobile devices. In general, members expressed strong support for all the Club programs. These depend entirely on volunteers. . . Please This email address is being protected from spambots. Safety Reminder and Update on Status of Group Activities:  May 29, 2020

As we reach the end of May, we are encouraged that Northern Virginia is now in Phase 1 of COVID reopening.  We are no longer required to wear face masks while exercising outdoors, although it is still encouraged.  We are still prohibited from gathering in groups larger than 10 people, therefore our group activities remain on hold.  We will continue to monitor state, county, and Reston Association guidelines to see when we might be able to resume our group activities.  Until then, we encourage everyone to stay fit and to keep running and walking, which is easy to do by yourself.  If however you choose to run near another person for safety or other reasons, practice the recommended 6-foot social distancing.  And in this current situation, in consideration of those who share the paths and trails of Reston with you, please don’t spit on the paths.

Dogwood School 5K

Dogwood_small.jpg

Reston Runners was pleased to be the sponsor, through our Reston Runners Community Fund, of the Dragon Dash at Dogwood Elementary School, FCPS this morning. This 5k was a fundraiser to move Dogwood toward accreditation as an International Baccalaureate primary years program school. For more information about our community fund see our website at http://rrcommunityfund.org/. Shown here are Reston Runners Community Fund President Mike McCord with Dogwood Elementary Assistant Principals Jamie Gadley and Stephanie Guffain and Principal Mie Devers. These dedicated school administrators not only organized the event but served as course sentries for the run. If you have a suggestion for other local activities or organizations that should be considered for RRCF support, please contact the RRCF board at This email address is being protected from spambots. A small, but hardy group, undeterred by the rain, maintains the Reston Runner tradition of Club runs in any weather; as many of our friends are running the Marine Corps Marathon in DC. Thanks to Catherine Nelson and Tim Smith for the course water.

RMR Winter Training Program (New for 2020!)

12 weeks to 13.1 miles!  Starting Saturday, January 11, 2020, an all new training program will be led by run-walk coach Liz Badley. The program starts January 11 and finishes with the Runners Marathon of Reston on April 5, 2020.  The Program meets at the same time (8 am) and the same place as the regularly scheduled Saturday Club run - See the Calendar.

Note from Coach Liz:

" Here is the plan for the season:

 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JmJxREy1FJsapCHBIRvhgE8Qs50oEPl2Hd06GHyzcOM/edit?usp=sharing

You can make a copy of the sheet and make your own notes as we go through the season! There are three links from Jeff Galloway's site on there! Please take a look at the Magic Mile one. There is a lot of great information on there!
I am sorry that I wasn't there this Saturday! I successfully completed my 4th WDW marathon challenge weekend! It was a fun, scorcher! The thing that was reaffirmed for me was that the Galloway Method WORKS! It allowed me to readjust my race plan when the temps rose into the 80s before the sun came up with high humidity and still finish while enjoying myself! It's one of the reasons Disney works with Jeff. His method works for everyone, from beginners too those looking too get faster!
In fact, people who have straight run a half marathon in the past can expect to drop around 7 minutes on average using the Galloway Method!
Please take a look at all the links. The biggest thing to remember, as we train, is the only way to finish (or get faster) is to say uninjured! This plan may seem conservative, but it will help you reach your goals this season!
I have started a Facebook Group so that you can ask questions and have added my training partner and a few other girls that can help answer any questions you might have moving forward!! Please join and have FUN! Remember, if you have a question, then other people probably have the SAME question!
Easy runs should be so easy that you can go on with your day with no soreness or tiredness! They should actually energize you! +2-3:30 per mile
Workouts (intermediate runners) should be hard, but each rep should be successful. If its not, slow down or take more rest.
Walking counts - time on your feet matters.
And I will leave you with this: I race the half and full in the 7:30-7:45/mile range and do my long runs around 10:45/mile. So lets say you have a goal of a 10/mile for the half, you will want to do your long runs at 12:30+ per mile.
I'm looking forward to helping you all achieve your goals this season! "

Registration is now OPEN.

Before_the_race_small.jpg

Great to see so many of our 10 Weeks to 10K program  people at the Finish Line, beaming at their accomplishments and proudly displaying their well-deserved medals!  For some it was their first 10K, and some ran their first 10 miler! Neither the warm weather, nor humidity, nor the hills deterred our intrepid group of 36 runners and walkers, and 8 coaches, from giving their best efforts on the course. Memorial Day Walk, Run, or Hike Outing - May 27, 2019

Drive to Franklin Park off of business Rt 7 just west of Purcellville and just east of Round Hill - 17501 Franklin Park Drive Purcellville Va
Enter the park, drive up the hill and on your right is the parking area, we can re-convene there.
The park has a 3 mile very pleasant path that goes around the perimeter of the park, it is not paved but that is about the extent of the "trail-ish ness" of it - one loop for a 3 mile walk or 2 for a six mile run or something in between - its your choice.
After about an hour or so of "activity" we head up to Bear Chase Brewery for a little refreshment. The Brewery is about  another 10 min up RT 7 west of the Park just off of rt 601. They open at 11:00.
If you prefer the Appalachian Trail - this is the hike part - the Brewery is just beyond a parking area that is off Rt 7 the Trail  will lead you you to Maine or Georgia - Its your choice.... or perhaps either Ravens Rock or Bear's Den Overlook if you'd rather be back in time for a beer.
Location  Franklin Park West of Purcellville, then Bear Chase Brewery in Bluemont
Car Pool option to meet at North Point Village Center at 08:30 - otherwise drive to Franklin Park. Please sign up so we know how many to expect: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b4babae2ba0fb6-memorial1

Friday, May 10 at 11:00 am - 12:30 pm, reception immediately following.

Floris United Methodist Church
13600 Frying Pan Road
Herndon, VA

———-
Ed belonged to the Unitarian - Universalist Church in Reston, but our church is not large enough for his service.

When planning for this service, Ed told us, “I just want everyone to be happy.”
Jim Nagle gently and lovingly said, “Well Ed, I don’t think people will be happy, but they will be happy that they knew you.”
He nodded in agreement.

Ed helped plan the service and the music. Please join us.

Know that he wanted us to be happy in our memories of him.
